The Friends of Falmouth Bikeways support and promote bike safety and bike activities throughout Falmouth. We work with the town, Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee, Falmouth High School Art Department, Falmouth artists and others to do this.
Since June of 2009 when this organization was incorporated, some of the projects we have supported along the Shining Sea Bikeway have been: better signage, electronic counters in several spots to gauge usage, graffiti removal, litter pick up, additional granite markers for safety, helmets for kids and adults and a porta-potty in the North Falmouth parking lot. We published a "Recreational Bike Guide" with a map of Falmouth bike routes. We keep the kiosk dispensers full of maps and brochures.
In addition, we have funded several public art projects:
1. Painted panels depicting the history along the bikeway hung on the back of Mid Cape Home (at mile 3.4). This year, 8 more panels depicting local birds will be hung there as well. All were painted by Jane Baker's Falmouth High School Honors Art class.
2. A mosaic and a painting at the Palmer Avenue underpass (mile 4.6),
3. AmeriCorps murals at Curley Blvd underpass (mile 9.7),
4. Information boards at Bud's Stop pavilion at the Depot Ave parking lot.
The Friends of Falmouth Bikeways partnered with the Town of Falmouth and paid for the wood fence at the Depot Ave parking lot, sharrows on Katharine Lee Bates Rd and Shore Rd and updated bike racks in the downtown Falmouth business area.
